Project Overview & Description

Anchor 1
TTBP-TAZ Biochemisty Research

For my project I am going to be working under a biochemistry professor, but leading a few other Pre-med students due to my laboratory experience. We will be running experiments to determine whether a common chemical found in consumer plastic products is dangerous in the human body. This research project will set me apart from other Pre-med students because it will give me a lot more experience with undergraduate academic research while serving as a leader. This looks great for medical schools because they expect their applicants to participate in some sort of undergraduate research. Understanding biochemistry more will also help me progress as I pursue my career to become a physician.

Project Outcomes
  • Gain a better understanding of biochemistry and research in that field. Learn how to lead others and pass on information.

  • Improve communication and teamwork skills.

  • Determine if TTBP-TAZ is a hazardous chemical (commonly found in dust and plastic consumer products).

Relationship to Coursework
This project directly relates to my biochemistry class because it is dealing with testing techniques that we commonly talk about in the course. One of the main techniques we will be using is SDS-PAGE, which separates protein samples by running an electrical current through an electrophoresis gel. I am an exercise science major, but if I will still be able to apply these concepts learned in this study to any enzymes that we learn about in courses such as exercise physiology. This will educate me more on proteins, enzymes, separation techniques, as well as other laboratory techniques.
Risk Assessment

This project will be Moderate Risk, due to working with certain solvents and an electrophoresis set up. These things are only moderately risky and do not require any formal training.

Objectives

Find out if our molecule of interest is harmful in the human body at all Determine how effective TTBP-TAZ is at linking biomolecules Effectively teach others how to conduct parts of the research

Will determine the efficacy of TTBP-TAZ in interacting with biomolecules and determine if more research needs to be done on the subject after the study.

Effectively lead two other research members to educate them more on the current research that is going to be done and how to perform multiple tasks within the laboratory setting.
